Easter Week is approaching in San Pablo Tacaná, a village in the mountains that separate Guatemala from Mexico, and everyone is nervous about the most important celebration of the year. There are doubts about the new hydroelectric plant’s ability to provide energy for all the people who will attend. The community has requested a loan and organized to build it, with the support of L’Olivera, Aiguasol, and Coop57, Catalan cooperatives that, like the people of San Pablo, believe in self-management to achieve local economic and energy sovereignty. Altogether, it’s an experience too dangerous for the interests of large corporations and a new way of understanding international cooperation.
